Out of the thousands of moving parts that make up your favorite fishing reel only a handful of particular parts directly affects how the reel performs and its durability. Ball bearings simply put are one of these important parts. The better the bearing the smoother and quieter the reel will crank and the less maintenance will be required in the long haul. Boca Bearings are new generation of ball bearing, hybrids made up from ceramic materials and stainless steel. These hybrid ceramic bearings incorporate the best of all worlds, being extremely resistant to wear, light, strong and corrosion resistant.

Taking the time to change out your old worn bearings is not a monumental undertaking like you may think. Most reels especially higher end or newer equipment (2005 or more recent) have either a couple of screws or small pins that need to be taken off to remove the outer cover. After this simply slide out the old bearings and in with the new. A little bit of new lubricant at this point is always a good idea to help things run smoother. Once installed and the reel is put back together the new ceramic bearings might be a little noisier and rough than you expected. No you didn’t put the bearing in wrong it is just going to take a little time for the lubricant to work its way into all the moving parts of the bearing and the reel. Once it does it will be smooth sailing from there on out.
The advantages of hybrid ceramic spool bearings may not be discernable to an weekend angler, but ask any individual who spends a lot of time on the water, and they’ll tell you that these bearings cast just as far if not farther then regular bearings but with less effort. It is this decreased effort where the difference is made. Normally anglers go out for an entire day or weekend to fish their favorite rivers and lakes. If you think about the number of casts that are made in hopes of catching a fish, hundreds if not thousands, wouldn’t it make sense to make things easier on yourself? The amount of energy you save using less force to cast, and smoothly bringing baits back will amaze you. Additionally hybrid ceramic bearings have a surface finish that is 5 times finer than stainless steel balls alone, so the wear of the surfaces are significantly reduced and bearing lifetime typically increases ( 5-10 times longer) than an all-stainless bearing. Keeping your time well spent in the field and not on maintenance.
Overall Boca’s hybrid ceramic bearings will help you save time and energy which doesn’t translate into catching fish, but at least you will be feel better doing what you love and that might help you to spend a little more time chasing that trophy.
